Vision Research

The big picture.

  • An estimated 39 million people around the world are blind, and another 246 million have low vision.
  • 10,000 Australians go blind every year and 200,000 Australians have vision impairment that cannot be corrected by glasses.
  • Vision loss doesn’t discriminate. It isn’t restricted to older people. It can affect children and adults at any point in their lives.
  • The impact of low vision and blindness is greater than the disability burden for breast cancer, prostate cancer, melanoma and HIV AIDS combined.
  • Vision loss leads to lower rates of employment, greater social isolation and emotional distress.

What we're doing.

  • New cures and treatments cannot be found without research. We provide seed funding to support research that tackles the big issues in eye health.
  • Rather than focusing on a single eye disease, we fund research into the full spectrum of eye conditions including macular degeneration, glaucoma, low vision, lens and cataract conditions, diabetic retinopathy, as well as rare and lesser-known eye diseases.
  • We direct funds to the best research projects in Australia. Grants and fellowships are decided by a rigorous national peer review system through The Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia (ORIA).
  • Since 2002, our partnership with ORIA has supported more than 243 projects across Australia.
  • There is still more to be done. We have an annual deficit of $600,000 that is needed to support other worthy projects.

ORIA Research Grants

We provide seed-funding for ORIA research grants which offer annual financial support for vision research projects.

The Eye Surgeons' Foundation, in conjunction with the ORIA, supports research into the causes, treatment and prevention of eye disease. Each year it supports a number of research grants for researchers who strive to alleviate suffering from eye disease.

The research we support is of the highest quality, is peer reviewed and monitored by the ORIA throughout the duration of each grant.
